VORCE

Valerie Ernst Locke January 7, 2002
My great great grandparents were William Ernst and Hannah Vorce (spelling might not be correct).  Neither of them were born in Missouri, and I don't yet have information that says they died there.  I do know they had children that were born in Lamar, Barton County, Missouri.
Martha Ernst was born about 1858.  She married Charles W. Kinkler.  No other information available.
John Jacob Ernst was born February 11, 1859, but I'm not sure he was born in Barton County.  He married America Belle Ebersole in 1885 who was born March 1, 1864, and died August 20, 1908.  He then married Delia Harris in 1912 and Jennie Kincaid in 1915.  I have no information about whether or not any of these women were born or died in Barton County.
Sidney Ernst was born about 1865 and married Emmet Moore who was born about 1859.
William Strange Ernst was born in Davis County, Iowa, on January 28, 1862.  He married Eva M. McPherson of Pennsylvania on January 26, 1980, in Burt County, Nebraska.  He died in Burt County, Nebraska on August 8, 1947.  Eva died there also on October 26, 1934.
Emma Elvesa Ernst was born on July 26, 1868 and died on January 4, 1950, in Normangee, Madison County, Texas.  She married James Davis McLain about 1889, whose date and place of birth is unknown but who died in March of 1958.
Mary Etta Ernst was born about 1869 and died in 1949.  She married (1) David McMurtry before 1890, and (2) Sam Silney about 1890.
Lydia Ruvina Ernst was born February 8, 1870.  She married Erastus Patterson in Burt County, Nebraska, on March 1, 1893.
Theresa Ernst was born in Lamar, Barton County, Missouri, on February 15, 1872.  She died in Burt County, Nebraska, on March 8, 1902.  She married Ai Lester McPherson in Nebraska on November 29, 1899.

I am working on my family tree and several generations lived in the Barton Co. area.  Henry Cole Brish FLACK arrived in Barton Co. Mo sometime after 1870 and before 1872 with his wife Rachael Jane CESSNA.  They built a large ranch just outside of Mindenmines and were active in the community as were all their children.  I would like to add these names to your websites and add more as it becomes available.   Thank you,

A., David, and William W. (who may have been married to Sarah A. Wilhelm in 1876).  One of these children may have been practicing law in 1869.  Any information will be greatly appreciated.

PEANICK

Beverly Nichols April 15, 2002
My Great ,great, Great Grandfather, Alfred PEANICK who owned land in Barton Co. Mo. around 1860, ancestors have it that he owned a farm in Golden City, His Great Granddaughter says that the county seat of Lamar is located on his on the site of his farm and that he donated land for the first school, now I know he was living in Golden City in the 1860 census, but another Granddaughter was told that Golden City is on his farm. So I am not sure which one is right, they say that he is not remembered , he was burned out in the civil war and had to pack up his family in one hour and leave.  If there would be any way of looking up records to prove this, it would be great, but I am told that the records were also burned, thank you.

CRENSHAW, LANE, FINK, KERR

Cliff Crenshaw April 19, 2002
Nicholas CRENSHAW and his wife, Eleanor "Ellen" Green (LANE), moved to Jasper County, in 1843, or maybe a little later, from Jackson County.  Moving with them were three of their nine children, a married daughter Sarah, wife of William Jones, and a married son, aforementioned Joel E., husband of Rebecca Jane (Bynum) and an unmarried son, John H. CRENSHAW.
Nicholas, Eleanor, Sara and William, Joel and Jane, Nicholas P. and John T., and John H. and Elizabeth, with two month old Eliza, show up in the Jasper County, 1850 census.
Joel and Jane had three sons (at least), the third of which was George L. CRENSHAW who married Virginia "Virgie" E. FINK, daughter of Charles FINK, farmer, orchard owner and something of a horticulturalist.  These, along with John H. and Elizabeth, with their family, have the closest ties to the Jasper County/Barton County area.
The link on this web site shows them as marrying, September 12, 1877.  They had two children who survived and possibly a third, a son, who did not.  I have seen that on the internet, but am unable to find it at the present time.  I believe it was on this web site.  It shows Virginia as giving birth to a third child, a male.  It gave the date as, August 18, 1887.
George L. died, August 18, 1937, in Los Angeles, fifty years to the day from the birth of the unidentified child.
George and Virginia would later move their family to California where he became a wealthy real estate developer.
He apparently owned a bank (most likely in Lamar). Sold it and moved, around 1905. Virginia is believed to have lived around Carthage.
George was born sometime around 1850-1852.  Joel and Jane died of cholera, in 1852, and are believe to be buried under what is now the Webb City airport.
Their other two sons moved back to Jackson County after being orphaned at an early age.  John T. CRENSHAW, my gg grandfather, was raised by Jane's relatives, in Lone Jack.
Nicholas, who was the oldest, made his way back to Jackson County, but am not certain when.  He showed as being four years old, in the 1850 census of Jasper County.  John T. was two.
John H. CRENSHAW married Elizabeth KERR in 1849.  In the 1850 census they had a two month old daughter, Eliza.  John H. fought for the Union, and was killed.  He is buried, in  Webb City Cemetery, with other Civil War casualties.  There is a sizable headstone at his grave. This is kind of all over the place, but it's late and that's my excuse.
One of the things I'd like to find out, is what was the name and location of the bank he owned.  That could be in the newspaper article.  It would have been in existence during the last twenty years or so of the 19th century as well as at least the early part of the 20th.  They are believed to have moved to California, in 1905.
I'm not certain if the Kerrs lived in what was to become Barton County, or if they lived in what is still Jasper County.
