COOPER, MARY P.

Barton County Progress, December  22, 1882

Died of throat disease, near Doylesport, November 20th, 1882, Miss Mary P. Cooper, aged 16 years, 7 months. Mary was a kind and affectionate sister, she bore her suffering with patience and resignation and died in the triumph of a bright home with Jesus. The cold dark river had no terrors for her. Before crossing the dark river of death, she said to her weeping sister, “ I am willing to go and you ought to be willing to give me up. Everything is bright to me and I want you to meet me in heaven. Tell my brothers and sisters it is the request of their dying sister to meet her in heaven”. Just before dying she reached out to her brothers and sisters and friends and begged them to kiss her good bye, then peacefully fell asleep in Jesus, the same sweet smile still hovered around her lips, she was wont to meet you with in life. Was it a smile of greeting to the angels that came to meet her? Her sun went down in the bloom of her life; but her light has not gone out forever. It is smiling beyond the stars, where there is no more darkness or death. She will live long in the memory of those who knew and loved her best. May the God of grace comfort the grief stricken hearts of her sisters and brothers and relatives, Weep not dear sisters and brothers, but rather rejoice that your sister is free from the cares and threats of this life, and is walking the “golden streets of the New Jerusalem”. Sisters and brothers, in her love you have a strong attachment drawing you to heaven. Will you heed the request of your dear sister and meet her there. One by one our loved ones are entering the kingdom of heaven. Oh may there not be one missing—but may we meet an unbroken family in our Father’s home.

                                                                                 A Friend.

GASH, UNKNOWN

Barton County Progress, October 21, 1882

Nevada---Before daylight this morning, two young men, named Gash and Parker, of Schell City, this county, started home from a dance at El Dorado Springs, about 22 miles east of here, in Cedar County. When about three miles from there the hack in which they were riding struck a stump or rock and turned over. Young Gash was thrown forward into a ditch or gully, and one of the horses fell on him. The horse fell on his back in the ditch and could not get up, and Parker was not able to move the animal, which held Gash under him. Parker had to go three miles back to El Dorado to procure help, when the party returned and relieved him he was almost speechless and died in a few minutes. The deceased was the only son and support of a widowed mother living in Schell City. Schell City News

SINEX, ELIZABETH A.

Barton County Progress, October 20, 1882

It is seldom that we are called on to announce a death so sudden and unexpected as that of the death of Mrs. Elizabeth A. Sinex, wife of Dr. Sinex of this place, and mother of Will, who is so well and favorably known as the gentlemanly assistant of Capt. Emery at the Post Office. One hour before her death she was enjoying her usual health and was attacked with a fainting spell. In the absence of her husband, Dr. Van Meter was called, but she was beyond the point where human skill could aid her. Mrs. Sinex had resided here about a year. She had many friends, was a devout Christian and a member of the Christian church. Her remains were taken to her old home in Indiana, accompanied by her husband and son.

THURMAN, J. L. DR.

Barton County Progress, October 20, 1882

Our citizens were both shocked and pained to learn of the sudden death of Dr. J. L. Thurman, brother to our townsmen Berry Thurman. He died on Saturday last after an illness of about six months. He was an eminent physician, his practice extended over portions of Dade, Cedar, and Barton counties. He was buried near Cedarville by the Masonic Fraterinty, the procession that followed his remains to the grave being over one mile long, the largest funeral that was ever witnessed in the southwest.
